Glass Coaster Workshop

I recently went on a glass workshop at Inlight Contemporary Glass Fusion in Hove, I had a great time and made 2 glass coasters. Chantal Mesnard who runs the classes makes beautiful clocks and dinnerware and other very inspiring work.

I made two coasters and fused glass and wire on top and inside the glass, we had two panels of glass and sandwiched items in between the glass and used to produce a coaster. We could each make our own tile design and she had a book of ideas which could inspire us.

I did enjoy the workshop when we got started, before we began we had to stand and listen to an hour talk about what we were going to do, which I forgot a lot of. It would have been far nicer to break this up throughout the session, in steps so we could remember it all. No questions were allowed to be asked and I didn’t feel very enthusiastic about making after the talk. So I thought I would just experiment a little and see how things turned out, as I know glass has a mind of its own in the kiln.

It felt a lot like being at school; it wasn’t a relaxing friendly atmosphere. Asking questions lead to snappy response and I didn’t feel comfortable. If you want to make some pretty coasters or jewellery I would recommend this glass but if you wanted to start it as a hobby and be inspired by a mentor then maybe this is not for you.

They are lovely! What a shame the class could’ve been more educational. … but you definitely made the best out of it.

It’s very interesting your work with glass!!
Your glass coasters are gorgeous , it reminds me the glass of Burano. The color combination is explosive! I love it.
I am anxious to see more.

  4. Thanks for liking my post, and sorry you didn’t get the best out of the workshop, but the coasters still look terrific. Take care and have fun creating.

These are beautiful–I love the combination of colors you’ve used in the coasters. It’s light and airy; perfect for a contemporary interior design.
